Moonlight

For many, the transition to winter is a contemplative time. The nights are getting longer, and, as the sun retreats, we view the world anew awash in the muted silvery illumination of the moon. At least since Anaxagoras in ancient Greece, a select few have always known that the moon is a big rock that reflects sunlight, but its often eerie phasal glow more often suggested and continues to suggest mysterious powers and enigmatic origins. Some thought it was a god. Others connected its phases to the phases of mental illness (the outdated word “lunacy” comes from “luna” for “moon”).
